What is Inventory Discovery?

Inventory discovery is the process buyers use to find, filter and assess advertising inventory that fits a campaign, using details such as channel, content, audience, geography, format, price, availability and deal type.

Also known as: media discovery, supply discovery

How it works

Every campaign starts with a question: where should these ads run? Inventory discovery is the work of answering it. Buyers translate a brief into criteria and then look for inventory that matches.

Common criteria include:

  • Environment and channel: web, app, connected TV, OTT, video, native, rich media.
  • Content and context: IAB content categories, or specific publisher types such as news, gaming or finance.
  • Audience and geography: markets, regions and audience signals.
  • Format and size: display sizes, video lengths, interstitials, overlays and so on.
  • Commercial terms: price expectations, availability and deal type, such as private marketplace, programmatic guaranteed or curated deals.

Discovery happens through several routes. Some buyers browse deal libraries in their DSP. Some ask sales teams or representation partners for proposals. Some use curated packages built around a theme. Increasingly, buyer agents query seller agents to run these searches automatically.

After discovery comes evaluation: checking quality signals like viewability, brand safety, supply path and authorized sellers before committing budget.

Why it matters

For buyers, good discovery means better plans with less effort. If the right niche publisher or CTV channel is easy to find, a campaign can reach the right people in the right context instead of defaulting to the same large sellers.

For publishers, discovery is a revenue question. Inventory that buyers cannot find, or cannot understand quickly, tends to be sold only through open auction at lower prices. Clear descriptions, sensible packaging and presence in the routes buyers actually use all make inventory easier to discover and more valuable.

Discovery is also changing. As AI agents take on more research work, structured, machine-readable inventory data becomes a practical requirement rather than a nice extra.

Example

Illustrative example. A media planner at a mid-size agency needs English-language CTV and mobile app inventory for a fitness brand in two markets. She filters the agency's deal library by format and geography, asks two representation partners for proposals, and uses a buyer agent to query the seller agents she is authorized to use. She ends up with a shortlist mixing a curated CTV package and two app PMPs, then checks supply path and viewability data before booking.

IncrementX perspective

For IncrementX, discovery is where representation becomes visible to buyers. Advertisers can explore the represented ecosystem through the Inventory Marketplace by publisher environment, channel, category, geography, format, context and deal type, with access through the IncrementX team, curated deals or Agentic Buying rather than a self-serve search tool.

For agentic buyers, IncrementX Seller Agent lets authorized AI buying agents discover represented inventory by site or app, IAB category, geography, device and environment, ad format, ad size, inventory type, pricing, deal type and availability. Access is by request.
