What is Buyer Agent?
A buyer agent is AI software that acts for an advertiser, agency or trading desk, turning a campaign brief into searches, comparisons and deal requests with sellers, within budgets and rules that people set and approve.
Also known as: buying agent, AI buying agent, buy-side agent
How it works
A buyer agent starts with a brief. That might be a goal ("reach parents of young children in Germany on CTV"), a budget, flight dates, brand safety rules and preferred deal types. The agent breaks the brief into tasks and works through them:
- Search. It queries the seller agents and other sources it is authorized to use, filtering by things like geography, device, format, content category and price.
- Compare. It ranks options against the brief and explains the trade-offs, for example reach versus price, or guaranteed versus non-guaranteed deals.
- Propose. It presents a shortlist or draft plan for a person to review.
- Request. Once approved, it asks sellers to create deals and collects the resulting Deal IDs so traders can activate them in their DSP.
The buyer agent is the buy-side half of a pair. IAB Tech Lab's AAMP initiative describes an agentic ecosystem that "will start with a Buyer Agent and Seller Agent talking to each other" and offers open-source reference SDKs for both (IAB Tech Lab, AAMP).
Why it matters
Media planners and traders spend a lot of time on discovery: requesting packages, chasing specs, building comparison sheets and setting up deals. A buyer agent can do much of that groundwork quickly and consistently, so people can focus on strategy and judgement.
The value depends heavily on the quality of what sellers expose. If inventory descriptions are thin or inconsistent, the agent's shortlist will be too. That is why buyer agents and seller agents tend to be discussed together, and why buyers should still check supply chain signals such as authorized sellers before committing spend.
Example
Illustrative example. A regional travel advertiser gives its agency a brief for summer holiday campaigns. The agency's buyer agent searches authorized sellers for travel and lifestyle content across web and app in two countries, filters for private marketplace deals, and returns eight options with notes on format and availability. A planner drops three, the agent requests deals for the remaining five, and a trader activates the Deal IDs in the agency's existing DSP.
IncrementX perspective
For IncrementX, buyer agents are part of how advertisers can reach the media it represents. Through Agentic Buying, authorized buying agents work with IncrementX Seller Agent to discover inventory and initiate deal creation today, receiving Deal IDs for activation through supported buying platforms.
Wider agent-to-agent buying workflows are being built with partners and should be treated as future-facing. Advertisers who prefer a human-led route can still work with the IncrementX team or choose from curated deals.
