What is Agentic Advertising?

Agentic advertising is the use of AI agents that can carry out advertising tasks, such as finding inventory, comparing options, proposing deals or analysing performance, on behalf of buyers or sellers, within goals and limits that people set.

Also known as: AI agent advertising, agentic media buying and selling

How it works

An AI agent is software that can take a goal, break it into steps and act on those steps using the tools and data it has been given. In advertising, that goal might be "find premium video inventory for a travel campaign in the UK" on the buy side, or "spot where floor prices are holding back demand" on the sell side.

Agentic advertising is the umbrella term for all of this activity. It covers several narrower ideas that this glossary treats separately:

  • Buyer agents act for advertisers and agencies, and agentic buying describes how they discover and buy media.
  • Seller agents act for publishers and media owners, making inventory machine-readable so authorized buyers can find it. See seller agent.
  • Agentic monetization is the sell-side use of AI to read revenue signals and support yield decisions. See agentic monetization.
  • Agent-to-agent advertising is the specific case where a buyer agent and a seller agent work with each other directly. See agent-to-agent advertising.

To act, agents need a reliable way to connect to outside systems. Open protocols such as the Model Context Protocol give an AI application a standard way to discover and call the tools a service exposes. Industry groups are also working on advertising-specific foundations: IAB Tech Lab describes AAMP as "an IAB Tech Lab umbrella initiative for bringing agentic AI into the advertising ecosystem" and publishes open-source buyer and seller agent SDKs (IAB Tech Lab, AAMP).

Why it matters

Much of media work is search and setup. Buyers sift through supply, request packages, compare specs and create deals. Sellers answer the same questions about formats, audiences and availability again and again. Agents can take on a lot of that repetitive effort, which leaves people more time for strategy, creative and relationships.

There are real limits, though. Agents are only as good as the data they can see, so inventory that is poorly described or locked away in PDFs stays invisible to them. Trust also matters: who is allowed to buy, which seller is authorized to sell, and who approves spend. Agentic advertising does not remove the need for ads.txt, sellers.json, brand safety checks or human sign-off on budgets.

Example

Illustrative example. A mid-size agency planner asks a buyer agent to shortlist CTV and web video inventory for a finance brand across three markets. The agent queries the seller agents it is authorized to use, filters by geography, format and deal type, and returns a shortlist with pricing ranges. The planner removes two options, approves the rest, and the agent requests deals. The planner still owns the final media plan and the budget.

IncrementX perspective

IncrementX is a media representation partner first, so its view of agentic advertising starts with the publishers and media owners it represents. For those inventory owners, agentic advertising adds a new route to demand alongside direct sales, curated deals, PMP and programmatic.

Today, IncrementX offers Seller Agent, an MCP-compatible interface that lets authorized AI buying agents discover represented inventory and initiate deal creation, available by request. On the advertiser side, Agentic Buying describes how buying agents work with Seller Agent, with wider agent-to-agent buying workflows still being built with partners. On the sell side, Agentic AI Monetization provides AI-assisted monetization intelligence that supports human decisions rather than running inventory autonomously.
