What is Programmatic Media Buying?
Programmatic media buying is the buyer-side process of purchasing digital ad impressions through software, usually a demand-side platform, where advertisers and agencies set budgets, targeting, bids and deals that are then executed automatically.
Also known as: Programmatic buying, Programmatic media purchasing
How it works
Programmatic media buying is the buyer's half of programmatic advertising. It describes what advertisers, agencies and trading desks actually do to purchase impressions, and the tools they use to do it.
The process usually looks like this:
- Plan. Define the campaign goal, audience, channels, budget and how success will be measured.
- Choose supply. Decide where to buy: the open auction, private marketplaces, programmatic guaranteed deals, curated packages or a mix.
- Set up in a DSP. In a demand-side platform, the buyer creates line items with targeting, bids, frequency caps and creatives. For deal buying, they add each Deal ID and target line items to it.
- Run and optimise. The DSP evaluates bid requests and bids automatically. The buyer adjusts bids, budgets and supply based on results.
- Review. After the campaign, the buyer checks performance, quality signals such as viewability and invalid traffic, and the cost of the supply paths used.
A growing part of buying work is choosing paths, not just impressions. Through supply path optimization, buyers reduce duplicate routes to the same inventory and favour paths that are more direct and transparent.
Why it matters
Good buying is less about pressing buttons and more about decisions. The same DSP can produce very different results depending on which supply a buyer chooses, how they handle data and how carefully they review quality. Open auction buying offers scale but more noise. Deal buying offers clarity but needs relationships and setup.
This is why curated deals and other packaged inventory have become popular with buyers. They take part of the supply selection work and hand the buyer a defined product to activate.
Example
Illustrative example. An agency planner is running a campaign for a generic regional bank. She sets a modest open auction budget for reach, adds two private marketplace deals with finance and news publishers, and activates a curated finance package through its Deal ID. After two weeks, she shifts budget towards the deals because they show better viewability, and removes several open auction paths that resell the same inventory.
IncrementX perspective
IncrementX supports programmatic media buying from the buyer's side in a few ways. Advertisers and agencies can access represented inventory through Curated Deals, activating PMP, PG and curated packages in their own platforms. For advertisers who prefer a managed approach, IncrementX offers managed DSP campaigns.
For buyers working with AI agents, Agentic Buying describes how buying agents can work with IncrementX's Seller Agent to discover inventory and initiate deal creation today, with wider agent-to-agent buying workflows being built with partners.
