What is Mobile App Monetization?

Mobile app monetization is the strategy an app publisher uses to earn revenue from its app and users, combining models such as in-app advertising, in-app purchases, subscriptions, paid downloads and sponsorships.

Also known as: app monetization, in-app monetization

How it works

An app publisher has to decide how the app will pay for itself. The main options are:

  • In-app advertising. The app shows ads and earns from advertisers. This suits apps with large free audiences. See in-app advertising for the formats involved.
  • In-app purchases (IAP). Users buy digital items, upgrades, currency or content inside the app.
  • Subscriptions. Users pay a recurring fee for access, premium features or an ad-free experience.
  • Paid downloads. Users pay once to install the app.
  • Sponsorships and partnerships. A brand pays to be associated with the app or a feature.

Most successful apps do not rely on one model. A common approach is a hybrid: ads support the large group of users who never pay, while purchases or subscriptions capture value from the smaller group who do.

Why it matters

The monetization model shapes the product itself. It affects where ad placements go, when paywalls appear, how often users are interrupted and how the app feels to use. A model that fights the experience tends to lose users, and with them the revenue.

For the ad portion, the app owner also has to think about demand. Which buyers can access the inventory, through which deal types, and at what price? Thin demand or poorly chosen formats can leave a large free audience earning far less than it could. This is where yield optimization and ad revenue optimization come in.

Example

Illustrative example. A free fitness app has a large base of casual users and a smaller group of committed ones. The developer offers a monthly subscription that opens up training plans and removes ads. For free users, it shows a rewarded video that grants one premium workout, plus an occasional interstitial after a session ends rather than during it. The ads earn from the casual users, and the rewarded placement gives them a taste of the paid tier.

IncrementX perspective

IncrementX works on the advertising side of an app's monetization plan. Through mobile app publisher representation, it helps app publishers understand and package their inventory and connect it with brands, agencies, DSPs and programmatic buyers. Supported Mobile App formats include rich media, overlay, in-stream, rewarded, interstitial and CPA offerwall. Purchases and subscriptions remain the app owner's own business; representation focuses on making the ad inventory work harder alongside them.
