What is Commerce Media?

Commerce media is advertising that uses commerce data and shopping or transaction environments to reach people, covering retailers as well as marketplaces, delivery apps, travel sites, payment providers and other businesses with purchase-related audiences.

How it works

Think of commerce media as the wider family that retail media belongs to. A retailer selling ads on its own site is doing retail media. A food delivery app, a travel booking site, an online marketplace or a payments company selling ads informed by its customer activity is doing commerce media too, even though none of them is a traditional retailer.

What these businesses share is a close view of buying behaviour. They see what people search for, browse, book or purchase. That gives them two things advertisers value:

  • Commerce environments. Pages and app screens where people are already in a buying mindset, such as search results on a marketplace or a restaurant list in a delivery app.
  • Commerce insights. Patterns in shopping or transaction activity that can inform audience targeting and measurement, within consent and privacy limits.

Commerce media can be sold onsite, offsite, or both. Onsite means ads inside the company's own properties. Offsite means using those insights to help plan or measure campaigns that appear on other websites, apps or connected TV, usually through privacy-conscious methods such as aggregated segments or clean room style matching.

Why it matters

For businesses with commerce data, it opens a new revenue line from audiences and environments they already have. For advertisers, it adds options beyond the largest retailers, and it can bring categories like travel, food or financial services into purchase-aware planning.

The category is still developing. Formats, audience definitions and measurement differ a lot from one company to the next, which makes comparison and buying at scale harder. Responsible data use is central, because the value of commerce data depends on people trusting how it is handled (see first-party data).

Example

Example (illustrative): A regional food delivery app sees steady evening traffic from people browsing restaurant menus. A beverage brand wants to reach that moment. The app offers a sponsored tile on its home screen and a short offsite video campaign aimed at a consented, aggregated segment of users who regularly order in the evening. The delivery app is not a retailer, but this is still commerce media.

IncrementX perspective

IncrementX's current focus within this space is retail media, where it positions itself as a representation and monetization partner for retailers and retail media businesses. The same media representation principles apply more broadly: understand the inventory and audiences, package them clearly, and connect them to the right buyers.

For advertisers, represented opportunities can be discovered through the Inventory Marketplace and bought through curated deals. The retail media representation page explains IncrementX's approach in more detail.
